Amanda Root BIO

Amanda Root is an accomplished British actress with a career spanning over three decades. Born on March 22, 1963, in Essex, England, Root grew up in a family of actors and performers. Her father was a theater director and her mother was an actress, which helped foster her love for the arts from an early age.
Root began her acting career in the early 1980s, appearing in several stage productions in London's West End. She made her Broadway debut in 1985, playing the role of Cecily in Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest." Root's performance was well-received by critics, and she quickly established herself as a rising star in the theater world.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Root continued to work in both theater and television. She appeared in several popular TV series, including "Agatha Christie's Poirot," "The Bill," and "Midsomer Murders." She also starred in several films, including the 1995 adaptation of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility," in which she played the role of Anne Steele.
Despite her success in film and television, Root remained committed to her first love, the theater. She continued to appear in stage productions throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including a critically acclaimed performance as Juliet in Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1992.
In 2007, Root returned to Broadway to star in the revival of Harold Pinter's "The Homecoming." She played the role of Ruth, a character described by The New York Times as "a woman of mystery, with a sly, amused smile and a voice that can be both soothing and chilling."
Root's performance in "The Homecoming" was widely praised by critics, and she received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play. The production was also a commercial success, running for over 100 performances at the Cort Theatre.
Since then, Root has continued to work in both theater and television. She appeared in the BBC miniseries "The Forsyte Saga" in 2002, and in the ITV drama "Foyle's War" in 2013. She also returned to the stage in 2014, playing the role of Queen Elizabeth II in the West End production of "The Audience."
Root's most recent work includes the 2019 film "Official Secrets," in which she played the role of journalist Edith Pretty. The film, which also starred Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes, tells the true story of British whistleblower Katharine Gun, who leaked classified information to the press in the lead-up to the Iraq War.
Throughout her career, Root has established herself as a versatile and talented actress, equally at home on stage and on screen. Her performances have been praised for their intelligence, sensitivity, and emotional depth, and she has become a beloved figure in the British theater community.
